Sheffield United are said to be in the running to sign Brighton defender Matt Clarke this summer, although a move could hing on what Arsenal do with Ben White.
White is expected to join the Gunners once the Euros is over. A £50m move is said to be all but agreed, although nothing is signed and sealed just yet.
United, meanwhile, are at the other end of the financial spectrum. They are said to be pursuing White’s Brighton teammate Clarke, who spent last season on loan with Derby County.
With United seeking additions in both defence and midfield, Clarke’s signing would make sense. But according to a report from Yorkshire Live, Arsenal’s move for White could be the deal breaker for United.
One in, one out
As can happen a lot in the transfer window, it’s a waiting game when it comes to incomings. Clarke is probably well down the pecking order at Brighton. In fact, we know he is. He’s behind Dunk, White, Webster, Veltman, and Dan Burn, as Yorks Live suggest.
But, there is always a but. Brighton won’t want to let White go without knowing they have a replacement. Now, whether they see that player as Clarke, is another question.
While ever the Seagulls don’t directly replace Clarke, though, then he’ll likely stay on the books. Derby are also said to be keen, but given their financial nightmare, United are in the driving seat.
Patience, then, could be needed by Slavisa Jokanovic and his recruitment team on this one.
