Sheffield United have apparently declared their interest in signing St Mirren midfielder, Jamie McGrath, during the summer transfer window.

The young Irishman has been impressive over the last 12 months, and scored 17 goals for St Mirren in the SPL last season.

The Irish Mirror claim that United have registered their interest in McGrath, who is expected to leave if the right bid comes in.

McGrath is an attacking midfield player with a knack of getting himself on the scoresheet. He’s also something of an expert from the spot, with ten of his 17 goals coming via penalties last term.

The 24-year-old has made his debut for the Republic of Ireland in recent times and has previously been tipped to be able to play for Scottish giants, Celtic.

“Jamie for me is a Celtic player. I look at some of the lads who are there now, the likes of David Turnbull, Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie. I can see Jamie being in and among that level of player,” his manager Jim Goodwin has said before.

Out of the blue

United have been linked with a number of names in this window but the name of Jamie McGrath is certainly a new one.

But, he seems to fit the profile of what we need as a club. We need goals and assists from midfield, and 17 last season suggests McGrath has that in the locker.

Given he’s at St Mirren, he also won’t cost the world either. And that isn’t to disrespect the Scottish side, it’s just well known that the fee won’t need to be anywhere like some we see down in the English game.

Blades boss Jokanovic said this week that a new signing was close. Whether it’s McGrath or not remains to be seen. Certainly, though, this is a player to keep an eye on for United in the coming weeks.
