Report: Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan wanted by 3 Championship clubs

Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan is wanted by three Championship clubs, according to Football Insider.

Blackburn Rovers, Luton Town and Wigan Athletic are the sides keeping tabs on Heneghan.

The 26-year-old is currently on loan at League One’s Blackpool, making 19 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Heneghan is out of contract this summer having failed to truly make an impact at Bramall Lane. The centre-back has played just once for the Blades since joining from Motherwell in 2017.

Heneghan spent the entire 2018/19 campaign on loan at Bloomfield Road and impressed enough to be re-signed by Pools this term.

It is unlikely Heneghan has a future under Chris Wilder. Having failed to breakthrough in the second tier, there is little chance he will now the Blades are in the Premier League.

Therefore, they are probably open to Heneghan leaving during the January transfer window. His loan spell at Blackpool expires on January 14 and after that his permanent exit from South Yorkshire could be sealed.

It is testament to Heneghan that he has gone out on loan to prove himself. His performances in League One has clearly convinced some he is ready to make the step up to the Championship.

Bottom-placed Luton are crying out for improvement at the back as they have the worst defensive record in the division. They, along with Wigan, currently sit in the relegation zone and perhaps represent the biggest risk to Heneghan as a result.

Blackburn, meanwhile, are comfortably in mid-table. They could possibly have outside hopes of making a push for the playoffs in the second half of the season.

Any of them would represent a move forwards in the career of Heneghan. Whatever happens now, it seems as if his time as a Blade is quickly coming to an end.
