Sheffield United could be set to spend a whopping £27m on Genk midfielder, Sander Berge, according to latest reports.
The Daily Mail claims that the Blades are desperate to land Berge, so could up their initial bid, thought to be in the region of around £17m.
Berge has been at the centre of a transfer saga between United and Genk in the past few days. Having apparently rejected a move to Bramall Lane in the summer, Berge is now more open to the idea of a move to Sheffield.

The signing would represent quite the coup for Blades boss, Chris Wilder. Having previously worked to a tight budget and insisted he won’t waste the club’s money, spending over £20m on one player would be a swift change on focus.

However, the Blades boss has also said he is keen for the club to progress. Signing new players, then, such as Berge, is a massive step in the right direction for the club.
The Norwegian, who has 20 caps for his country, is highly-regarded throughout European football. Having helped Genk to the title last season, he’s played in the Champions League this term.
The saga continues
This is one transfer which doesn’t appear to be going away.
For Sheffield United fans, it is quite exciting. They aren’t used to seeing the Blades splash big sums of money on players, so to be linked with such a talent for such a fee is new to a lot of them.

If United do manage to land Berge it would send a major statement out to the rest of the league. Furthermore, it demonstrates just how far the club has come in the last six months or so.
Finally, in terms of football, he’d be a shrewd addition. John Lundstram has been out of form of late while Mo Besic is only on loan.
Adding a midfielder of sufficient quality, then, is of paramount importance to the club.
