Sheffield United and West Brom both hold an interest in Aston Villa midfielder, Conor Hourihane, according to reports this morning.
A report from The Athletic claims that both United and the Baggies are keen on Hourihane, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract.
Hourihane spent the second half of last season with Swansea City and impressed once again at Championship level. The Irishman is seen as someone who knows the league well, having won promotion with Villa in the playoffs a few seasons back.
He also knows South Yorkshire well. Hourihane enjoyed a fine spell with Barnsley, where he was chief creator for the Reds.
However, any move could hinge on his wage demands and what Villa want in terms of a loan fee. The Athletic’s report details how Championship clubs are struggling for funds this summer.
That could, of course, leave United and clubs like West Brom and Fulham with a slight advantage due to parachute payments.
Hourihane the ideal signing
Just days after we suggested he’d be a fine addition, interest in Hourihane comes to light through a reputable source.
In terms of the ideal midfielder for United, they don’t come much better really than the Villa man. Experienced, good with the ball, deadly on set-pieces, and with an eye for goal. Further, he’s also a loan, which suits United’s model this summer.
It seems the Blades and West Brom are going for similar players. That is to be expected, of course. But Jokanovic needs some fresh faces, so if a deal can be done for Hourihane, it needs sorting quickly.
This is one that can’t get away.
