The Sheffield Star has moved to clarify a rumour doing the rounds on social media surrounding Rotherham’s Ben Wiles and Sheffield United.

Despite their being no credible link to the rumours doing the rounds, online forums and Twitter accounts quickly picked up on apparent interest in Wiles from the Blades. Indeed, it even went as far to suggest a deal had been agreed, which was only backed up further (to some) when Stephen Bettis admitted a bid had been lodged for a player.

However, the Sheffield Star has clarified the situation regarding Wiles and United today and insisted that, as yet anyway, no bid has been made by the Blades for the Millers star.

Instead of confirming what many thought was nailed on news, The Star has reported how Wiles has not been the subject of an offer from the Blades. And while it’s suggested in the article that Wiles fits the profile of player United are looking at, nothing is remotely close.

Our View: Ben Wiles To Sheffield United Seemed Unlikely From The Start

The power of social media, eh? There was simply nothing to suggest that Wiles was signing for Sheffield United other than a few ‘ITK’ accounts suggesting otherwise.

Of course, down the line it might be something we see happen. Rumours can sometimes be true and as the old saying goes, ‘there is no smoke without fire’. Wiles would, naturally, be a good signing for United. He is a bundle of energy and Paul Warne labelled his midfielder as ‘some talent’ following a performance against Sunderland last season.

It’s certainly worth keeping an eye on this as the summer goes on. But for now at least, it seems this is a non-story.
