The Blades could be set for disappointment in their pursuit of Ugurcan Cakir, with Leicester City reportedly prepared to pay the asking price for the stopper.
According to Turkish media outlet Aksam, the Foxes are willing to pay the €22m asking price from his current club, Trabzonspor.
That, of course, would throw a spanner in the works when it comes to the Blades looking to make their own move. With no decision made on the future of Dean Henderson as yet, United will be weighing up other options in goal.
Indeed, reports recently have linked Cakir with a move to Bramall Lane. However, it is also believed that Liverpool are keen, meaning Chris Wilder’s men have a big fight on their hands to the land the stopper.
Cakir has been in fine form over in Turkey this season. He’s helped guide Trabzonspor into the top four and they are currently within a single point of going top of the table.
United have shown their mettle in the European market of late. The signings of Sander Berge, Panos Retsos, and Richairo Zivkovic in January have proved that the club is willing to delve into Europe if the right player is available.
The price of success
With things going so well for United and European football potentially on the horizon, the transfer targets, ultimately, become bigger and better-known players.
Cakir, then, is a player who is bound to attract plenty of attention this summer. It goes without saying that Sheffield United will face competition for this sort of player.
The only bonus United have is that they may have a number one slot open. The Foxes currently have Kasper Schmeichel in that position. Liverpool, meanwhile, have Alisson.
Both of those stoppers are not going to be going anywhere anytime soon.
The saga over Ugurcan Cakir is something that might rumble on for a while. The Blades will, no doubt, keep a keen eye on proceedings if they are indeed interested in the Turkish star.
