Former Sheffield United loanee Panos Retsos will not be making a return to the club, with the Greek defender set to complete a move to Saint-Etienne from Bayer Leverkusen.
Retsos arrived at Bramall Lane in January last season but only made a handful of appearances as the campaign was curtailed by Covid-19. He returned to Germany before the season finished, with the Blades opting against making any sort of permanent move.
But with a defensive crisis (of sorts), thanks to Jack O’Connell’s injury, the name of Retsos had once again been mentioned amongst some Blades fans across social media platforms.
However, the versatile defender is set to sign for Saint-Etienne, who will sign Retsos on an initial loan deal with a view to buying him. Retsos will replace key figures at the French club, who lost William Saliba and Wesley Fofana this summer.
GetFootballNews Germany claim the deal is set to be concluded in the coming days. The 22-year-old will hope to kickstart his career in France after a 12 month period where he has failed to kick on.
A shame, but Retsos a player we were never going to go back for
It made sense to see the name of Panos Retsos once again mentioned among fans. He was versatile, looked to have ability and crucially, played in defence in the main.
However, Wilder and Knill had enough time to look at him and clearly weren’t blown away by the Greek international. With that, it looks like we were never following up any sort of interest we held before.
Hopefully, Retsos can go on to prove himself once again and we may well see him in the PL again one day.
