Report: Celtic to be told to pay up if they wish to land George Baldock

Scottish giants Celtic have apparently put Sheffield United defender, George Baldock, back on their shopping list for the summer.

Baldock, 28, was a target for the Bhoys two years back. It was claimed in 2019 that Celtic wanted the United full-back. However, Baldock signed fresh terms with the Blades in the winter of 2020, putting to bed any immediate rumours about his future.

But the Daily Record now claims that Celtic could reignite their interest in Baldock. They claim that new Bhoys boss, Ange Postecoglou, is an admirer of the United star.

Baldock has been a key figure for United ever since his arrival from the MK Dons. He’s made over 130 appearances for the club, with 70 of those coming in the Premier League. Indeed, he was an ever-present as the Blades finished 9th in the 19/20 campaign.

Sadly for Celtic, though, they’re set to be met with the same treatment United are giving the likes of Arsenal at the moment.

Standing firm

As is the case when it comes to other top players in the United ranks, the Blades will only be selling Baldock is a huge offer comes in. That’s according to Yorkshire Live anyway, who suggest the Scottish club will be met with a short, sharp answer if they do approach.

United are sending a similar message when it comes to Sander Berge and Aaron Ramsdale. Arsenal are said to want the pair. However, the Blades are wanting around £35m each. As yet, it remains to be seen if the Gunners will pay up.

Yesterday saw reports suggest that talks were underway between Arsenal and United over Ramsdale. In terms of Berge, things have gone quieter.

Sheffield United News View: Baldock a key player but others lie in wait

There’s no doubting Baldock remains our first-choice right-back. Not only does he have the quality in the position, but he’s also a serial winner.

Nobody in this Sheffield United team hates losing more than Baldock. You can see it in his performances, and you can see he cares. That trait is hard to replace, even though the likes of Jayden Bogle and Femi Seriki are talented.

If Celtic do want Baldock, then they’ll need to splash out. Premium full-backs are worth a lot in the modern game. And while United won’t demand a fee similar to that of Ramsdale or Berge, the club still value Baldock a lot.

Don’t be surprised, then, to see the Blades as for around the £15m mark.
