Report: Aston Villa strike again, this time outbidding Sheffield United for John Swift

Aston Villa look set to pip Sheffield United to another signing, with Dean Smith’s men set to bid more than the Blades to land Reading star, John Swift.

Birmingham Live reports that the Villans are set to offer the Royals around £6m for the midfielder, who has been the standout performer for Reading for a number of seasons now.

The Blades were said to be in advanced talks with Swift at one stage. But talks seem to have stalled since, with Reading playing hardball and trying to drive the price up for their man.

This, despite Swift’s apparent preference to move to Bramall Lane and work under Chris Wilder, something we covered just a few weeks ago, here.

But Villa, as they have done with Matty Cash, appears to be throwing a spanner in the works when it comes to the Blades landing Swift. United are being stringent with their spending and could well walk away from talks if they feel £6m is too much for the Reading man.

Coincidence or just the same market? You decide – Our View

It’s becoming a bit like groundhog day in that every time we get linked with a player, Aston Villa and Dean Smith seem to be there waiting with a bigger bag of cash.

In fact, it’s become a bit of a recurring theme and joke on social media. Swift, Matty Cash, Rhian Brewster, Ollie Watkins, the list seems to go on and on.

Now, whether it is coincidence or just the fact both clubs are in the same market, is open to interpretation.

But in terms of Swift, it’s completely down to money again it seems. And this is where Chris Wilder and Stephen Bettis won’t be made fools of. If we feel £6m isn’t good value, then we’ll have no hesitation in walking away.

Swift is a quality player. But there are others out there and if Villa wants to keep splashing the cash, then so be it.
