Report: Aston Villa keen on Sander Berge; Arsenal previously keen on Sheffield United man

According to Eurosport, Aston Villa could make a move for Sheffield United’s Sander Berge, if the Blades are relegated.

It is claimed that Dean Smith could make a move for Berge if, as expected, Sheffield United drop into the Championship for next season.

Berge was a club-record £22m signing for United back in January of 2020. Since then, he’s grown into being a key player for Chris Wilder, although he has missed all of 2021 with injury so far.

But Eurosport claims that Villa may well move for Berge. Their interest comes just a few months after it was claimed Arsenal also held the Norwegian midfielder in high regard.

Chris Wilder has admitted in recent weeks that Berge may well leave the club if the right offer came in. The Blades boss honestly conceding that the club were always likely to be a stepping stone for Berge.

Aston Villa want Sander Berge but the money needs to be right

With relegation, will come the inevitable sale of one or two players for Sheffield United. Even if finances are looking well, every relegated club sells someone, especially when big bids come in.

A move to Villa would probably suit Berge as well. A chance to play with high quality players like Jack Grealish, as well as the opportunity to play European football, depending how Villa finish the campaign.

The only sticking point would be a fee. United would surely want at least their money back for Berge, with a profit something not out of the question either.
