Pundit claims Dean Henderson should already be ahead of David De Gea

Former footballer and now pundit, Tony Cascarino, has claimed that Manchester United should already be playing Dean Henderson ahead of David De Gea.

The United loanee kept his eighth clean sheet of the season on Friday night against West Ham. During the game, Henderson made a fine save to keep out Manuel Lanzini’s free-kick.

It was another fine performance from the Blades stopper. Henderson has transitioned seamlessly into the Premier League. Having kept 21 clean sheets last term, he’s already a third of the way there at an even higher level.

And Cascarino has claimed that Manchester United are dropping a clanger by not already having him as their number one.

“I’m looking at De Gea and thinking, I’d have Dean Henderson at Sheffield United over you,” he said (Talksport).

“He’s had a stinker. Henderson is a Manchester United player and his performances have been far better than De Gea’s this season.”

De Gea has made a number of high-profile mistakes this season despite signing a new deal with the club.

The Spaniard is entering his tenth year with the Red Devils and has been a key man for a while now. He’s won the player of the year award at Old Trafford on more than one occasion, too.

However, his form this season has already led some Man United fans to call for the club to recall Henderson.

Making a case

There’s no doubt about it. Dean Henderson is making a real claim to the main man at Manchester United next season.

Comments like this from Cascarino aren’t just the opinion of one person either. Henderson has drawn a number of plaudits throughout the season while De Gea continues to struggle.

If the pattern continues as is, then Henderson might just be the number one at Old Trafford next season.
