‘Paul knows’: Journalist now shares why Sheffield United haven’t publically addressed Chris Wilder rumours

The Sheffield United rumour mill took a bizarre turn last weekend as Chris Wilder was linked with replacing Paul Heckingbottom.

Despite only just winning promotion last season, the Daily Mail claimed that Wilder was being eyed by Prince Abdullah to return to the club. Since then, Heckingbottom’s future and Wilder’s potential return has been a talking point among the fanbase.

However, answering questions for Yorkshire Live, Sheffield United journalist Nathan Hemmingham has addressed just why the club don’t feel a need to address the rumours.

Why Sheffield United haven’t addressed Heckingbottom and Wilder talk

Addressing a number of issues in his latest Q&A, Hemmingham got onto the subject of Wilder potentially taking over from Heckingbottom.

And after confirming there is nothing in the rumours to start with, Hemmingham then addressed why the club hasn’t made any sort of statement.

“They don’t need to come out and back him at this stage because then they are responding to an incorrect story. If those headlines persist then possibly, similar to what Prince Abdullah said about Wilder when he was subject of the same headlines. Also, Stephen Bettis said during the international break that he has the full support of the club, that’s backing,” Hemmingham wrote.

“In terms of a contract, he was given a lengthy one at the time of his appointment, one that is sure to have clauses regarding wages depending on what division they are in, so that is covered. I understand you saying the need for a statement, but internally, Paul knows the situation and knows his job is not under threat.”

Sheffield United News View: Not worth the time or effort

The initial links always seemed bizarre and it was no surprise it came from the same outlet who had previously reported on apparent issues at the training ground and more.

It’s good that the club feel no need to entertain these rumours. At the moment, it seems utterly ridiculous that the club would consider removing Hecky, never mind bringing Wilder back.

Heckingbottom deserves time to get things right. Sure, the Blades could very much do with that first win right now. But overall, the United boss has done little wrong and the club is in a good place with him in charge.
