Paul Heckingbottom has been speaking about Sheffield United’s season this year and pinpointed exactly where he thinks things started to feel really down.

United parted ways with Heckingbottom to bring Chris Wilder back to the club. Heckingbottom had only won a single game as United boss in the Premier League, the 2-1 win over Wolves, before he got the boot.

However, there had been some encouraging displays in there too where many felt United been unlucky.

Draws with both Brighton and Everton left Blades fans feeling some hope was there. As did a performance at Tottenham, where two late, late goals robbed United of a huge three points.

And speaking to TalkSPORT, with quotes transcribed by The Bladesman on X, former boss Heckingbottom has admitted it was that game at Tottenham where he felt things change.

“We signed a few good players towards the end of the window and all of a sudden there was a lift. The first game we played our team, James McAtee, Cameron Archer, Oli, Gus Hamer, Vini Souza, was Spurs away. We conceded two late, late, late goals to lose. I’m not going to lie, that was a blow. You could feel it, the deflation,” Heckingbottom said

Tottenham away sums up Sheffield United’s season

It’s interesting that Heckingbottom picks this moment out and most fans will probably feel it had a big impact as well.

The following week, United were hammered 8-0 by Newcastle before going on to lose the next four, which included shipping five at Arsenal.

It can’t be underestimated how much that Spurs game killed momentum. Had we taken even a point, there’d have been a feeling of a job well done inside the dressing room. Instead, the players left feeling their very best still wasn’t good enough and that must have been hard to take.

The interview from Hecky has been an eye-opener and one a lot of fans probably wanted to hear.

Certainly, it seems there are issues at the club that aren’t going to be solve in the blink of an eye.
