Oli McBurnie has said that talk of a push for Europe is something that is being discussed between Sheffield United players.
The Blades have managed to keep pace with the chasing pack at the top end of the table. Before the halt in play for the global Covid-19 pandemic, United sat seventh, just two points from fifth-placed Man United.
As things stand, fifth could see a Champions League place for the Blades. And despite Chris Wilder consistently admitting he takes things game by game, McBurnie has conceded that talk of Europe is rife amongst the United squad.
“It’s not one of them where we are getting ahead of ourselves. It’s more a ‘look what we can achieve’,” McBurnie said. (Sheffield United Youtube)
“We’re in this position because we deserve to be. Nobody has given us the points. It’s there for us to take. If we are winning games and others aren’t then we deserve to be there fighting for the Europa and Champions League”.
United were many pundits’ tip to go down at the beginning of the season. However, Chris Wilder has managed to get his team playing brilliantly. Europe, then, remains a possibility and McBurnie admits it’s talked about.
“Of course, we talk about it in the dressing room. We all want to play at the highest level we can. It’s down to us to try and stay there and that’s what we are going to try and do”, he added.
Right to be optimistic, but realistic
As the season has progressed and the games have ticked by it’s become more and more apparent that United are right in the European fight.
It’s obvious, then, that those thoughts are resonating with the first-team squad. McBurnie’s admission that the players are talking about it shouldn’t really come as a massive surprise.
The big striker looks really settled of late. The footage released from the Blades was a real insight into McBurnie and should endear him even further to the Bramall Lane faithful.
