‘Not real fans’…Chris Sutton slams Sheffield United’s supporters against Arsenal

Sheffield United were battered by Arsenal last night as Mikel Arteta’s side simply steamrolled the Blades.

A night under the lights at Bramall Lane is normally something special but last night was as far away from that as it could get. Arsenal simply battered United and a score line of more than wouldn’t have been surprising in the end.

United found themselves 4-0 down after just 24 minutes after Kai Havertz had smashed in and that goal signalled a mass exodus of Bramall Lane as the fans streamed out and home (or to the pub).

However, rather than back those supporters, pundit Chris Sutton chose to twist the knife a bit by insisting those supporters are ‘not real fans’.

“Not real fans. Not real fans. Just stick with your team,” Sutton remarked on the BBC’s Monday Night Club show.

In the end, a fair few thousand did remain inside Bramall Lane despite the misery. An improved second half – to a degree – at least stemmed the tide and the introduction of some of the younger players improved things a touch.

Completely unfair from Sutton

This was just the throwaway comment of a pundit who has obviously not watched Sheffield United much this season and sits in the high tower making brash statements.

Even the other pundits on the show disagreed with him and could see the point Sheffield United fans were making.

For clarity, that fourth goal going in was the 19th United fans have seen go in against their team at home in just four games. And that’s without reply since we scored twice against Brighton in the FA Cup.

How Sutton can call those supporters who left not real fans is beyond me. Your writer here personally knows season ticket holders of many years who went home simply because they’d had enough of sitting through the embarrassment on a cold Monday night.

Sheffield United have been woeful all season and even Chris Wilder said he could see the point of view of those who went early.
