Sheffield United fans will be wondering if there are going to be tickets available for the trip to Newcastle United this month.
However, following the latest news today, it appears Blades fans have attended their final Premier League away game for a while.
That’s because a late call from the government and Premier League powers that be have decided the final two fixtures of the PL season will go ahead with fans, but only those in the home end.
Some 10,000 fans, or 25% of capacity, will be allowed into Premier League grounds for the final two games. Among these is a trip to Newcastle for Sheffield United.
The confirmation puts an end to speculation that emerged earlier in the week. That had suggested around 500 away fans may be allowed to travel for the final fixtures. But with the government treading carefully along its ‘Roadmap to Freedom’, the brakes have been applied.
It means the next feasible away trip for loyal Blades fans will be next season in the Championship.
United fans last tasted an away day all the way back in February of 2020. A 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, and a memorable sing-song with Sander Berge, meaning the Blades at least signed off in style to the away fans.
No tickets for Sheffield United fans at Newcastle
Obviously, safety is paramount and we need to follow the rules and guidance as it is being given out.
But you can’t help feel a sense of disappointment for the loyal United fans. Our support, especially away, was immense last season. It drove the team on and helped them over the line more than once.
Chris Wilder noted more than once how the lack of fans impacted the club after lockdown. And he’s right.
The sad thing is that Wilder never got the send off his work deserved. At least the players, despite a miserable campaign, should have 10,000 Blades fans cheering them on, and then clapping them off, on the final day of the season against Burnley.
