After gaining promotion with Sheffield United, Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson is going to get an England call-up – according to the Sun.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has previously admitted Henderson was in his plans.

“Dean Henderson is playing really well at Sheffield United and is also close to our squad,” Southgate was quoted by the Sheffield Star back in March.

This will of course be welcomed by the goalkeeper, who has publicly expressed his desire to represent his country.

“Listen, I’m chasing down that England spot. I want to be in the Euro’s next summer,” Henderson told the Sheffield Star.

“The only way I can get in that set-up is by playing Premier League football. I know that. I’ve been told that. I know the gaffer will give me that opportunity so let’s do it and see what happens.”

Why Henderson is in the running

The 22-year-old has not missed a single minute of Championship football for the Blades this season after signing on loan from the Red Devils last summer.

No ‘keeper in the division has kept more clean sheets than Henderson in 2018/19, either. The England Under-21 international currently has 21 with one match left to play.

As well as that he has overseen the best defence in England’s second tier. The Blades have conceded just 39 goals this term.

It begs the question why Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph was included in both the EFL and PFA teams of the year ahead of Henderson?

Not only that, but Southgate is also struggling to find three consistent stoppers to rely upon in his squad.

Jordan Pickford is the preferred number one, but has had far from an assured season at Everton. Jack Butland plays in a Stoke City team that has underwhelmed in the Championship. Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy are both out of favour at Southampton.

Aside from Henderson, the only two other English goalkeepers that have impressed are Angus Gunn at the Saints and Burnley captain Tom Heaton. And neither has played anywhere near as many minutes as the Blades stopper.
