Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom has slammed Oli McBurnie after he was sent off at Burnley today.

It was another dire day at the office for United and Heckingbottom the Blades boss is now hanging on to his job by a thread heading into Liverpool in midweek.

For United, a goal inside 20 seconds did the damage early and from there it was never going to work.

Then, McBurnie compounded matters by losing his head and getting sent off for two yellows in quick succession.

And speaking to the Sheffield Star, Heckingbottom conceded McBurnie had let everyone down.

“He’s let me down. He knows he has,” Heckingbottom said.

McBurnie red just sums up the season

Chris Sutton branded McBurnie an ‘idiot’ in his own assessment and it’s not far wrong in all honesty.

We have always backed Oli Mac on this site and we genuinely believe he brings a lot to the team that we don’t have elsewhere.

However, he lost his head today at a time when we needed him most and he’s now unavailable. Again.

The theme of McBurnie being out injured or then suspended like now just adds weight to us not offering him a new contract. Because really, what has he done to earn it?

This is so disappointing from the United number nine today. Heckingbottom has been wonderful for him on a personal level and it feels a bit like he’s sold the boss down the river.

However, it’s a chance for someone else now and Will Osula might just take his opportunity if he gets it in midweek against Liverpool.
