Sheffield United Transfer News: Joe Gelhardt decision made after tepid links

Sheffield United won’t be signing Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt this winter, with the forward now set to join Wigan Athletic on loan.

Gelhardt was a name we on Sheffield United News believed was ideal to replace Reda Khadra. We wrote just this month how the Leeds striker would be ideal. Since then, local media such as Yorkshire Live answered questions on Gelhardt and United, believing he’d be a player the Blades would take.

However, any hope of potentially signing Gelhardt looks to be at an end. TalkSPORT report today how Gelhardt has turned down as many as ten Championship clubs to re-join his old club, Wigan. It comes as Gelhardt has become disillusioned with life under Jesse Marsch at Leeds this season.

Gelhardt played a starring role towards the end of last season. But the form of Rodrigo, coupled with new signings and a return of Patrick Bamford, has seen Gelhardt shunted down the pecking order.

The youngster will now return to the club that got him the move to Leeds in the first place. Gelhardt arrived at Elland Road back in August of 2020 for an undisclosed fee.

Sheffield United News View: Gelhardt would have been great but we move on

There was never any concrete ‘link’ as such here, more that an opinion piece by ourselves was picked up on and the idea of Gelhardt signing became a nice thought.

The Blades will simply need to move on here. Gelhardt clearly has a special place in his heart for Wigan and he’s going back somewhere he feels comfortable. Certainly, Wigan need him, with Kolo Toure desperate for new faces.

For United, it will now just be a case of scouring the market for other names. Paul Heckingbottom does want another forward player, but has admitted he won’t just be signing anyone.
