Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand have both slammed Rhian Brewster for making a ‘silly’ tackle to see red against West Ham today.

Brewster was thrown on by Chris Wilder and failed to impact the game before putting in a shocking challenge near the end to see red.

The former Liverpool striker has had a miserable time of things since arriving at Sheffield United and his red card today just about summed things up for him.

And speaking on TNT Sports about the incident, former Hammers Cole and Ferdinand both agreed it was a reckless decision from the Blades forward.

Rhian Brewster slammed for ‘silly’ red card challenge

Speaking on TNT, Cole branded Brewster silly, before Ferdinand suggested how Chris Wilder handle the issue.

“Silly lad. I understand his frustrations and it’s not worked out. But he’s left the floor. coming from the wrong angle, players reactions are usually a good indicator. He could have really hurt him there, it was right in front of us,” Cole said.

Following on from Cole’s comments, Ferdinand then suggested Wilder have a word with the striker.

“I agree, the way Wilder has to handle that is that he needs to say I’m with you. I want you to have that intensity but just rein it in. But he’ll come good again, I’m sure,” Ferdinand added.

Brewster could see time at United end

Chris Wilder appeared to suggest it might not have been a red after the game but he must not have seen it back.

It was a shocker from Rhian Brewster and it could even lead to the club looking to offload him. He’s now out for three games when he’s already missed huge chunks through injury and has just not helped himself at all.

The word silly from Joe Cole here about sums it up. Sure, we understand Rhian’s frustrations about his career so far.

But this was just naive and given the strikers now on the books, he could find it hard to get back in with a sniff when he does return.
