John Egan played 90 minutes for the Republic of Ireland last night as he ended up on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreline against France.
Egan has become a key player for Ireland in recent years and often captains his national team. He returned to the starting XI last night after coming off the bench v Latvia. And he did so to good effect.
Despite France having an exceptional frontline that includes Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, and Antoine Griezmann, Egan managed to limit the French to few genuine efforts. In the end, it took a goal from full-back Benjamin Pavard to settle things.
But despite the loss, Egan won praise from the Irish press for his performance.
Why Chelsea FINALLY Turned A Corner.
What Ireland’s media said about John Egan
Coming off the back of his decent cameo v Latvia, Egan was at his excellent best against a dangerous France side.
He was given a 7/10 across three separate media outlets, with all three paying attention to how Egan led the Irish defensive effort.
“Returned to the centre of defence and prevented Giroud from a sight on goal. Ireland’s positioning was crucial and he marshalled the defence well. A fine display,” The Irish Independent lauded.
“Dependable as ever at the back and did a solid job keeping Giroud under wraps,” The Irish Mirror wrote.
“Booked late on for a collision. Led Ireland’s defensive effort with three blocks and clearances apiece,” 90Min added.
Sheffield United News View: Relief for the Blades
Barring any sort of surprise news emerging, it seems we’ve got John Egan back in one piece from this international break.
The danger with having someone like Egan – who is picked regularly for his country – comes in the form of the nervousness which comes with him playing for Ireland at the heart of the defence.
Egan seems to have come through the France class fully fit. This is vital for United, who prepare to face Norwich on Saturday to begin the crucial final run-in. As ever, John Egan will be vital in picking up results during the next two months.
