‘He’s brilliant’…Chris Wilder lauds 29-year-old Sheffield United star; wants him to stay next season

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder had plenty to be proud about following the Blades’ 2-2 draw with Chelsea yesterday.

United got a deserved point from the game when Oli McBurnie scored late on to ensure the day’s efforts didn’t go without reward.

United had got themselves level through Jayden Bogle but a fine effort from Noni Madueke put Chelsea ahead and looked like being enough for them to hang on and win.

However, McBurnie’s persistence paid off and he rifled in in front of the Kop to make it three draws from the last four games and give United a platform to build on.

Of course, while McBurnie got the plaudits, other players also put in fine performances.

One of those players to deliver was versatile midfielder, Ben Osborn.

And speaking about the former Nottingham Forest man after the game, Wilder admitted he loves what Osborn brings to the table, while also revealing he’s a player he wants to keep next season.

Chris Wilder praises Ben Osborn against Chelsea

Speaking in his post-match interview about the performance and Osborn in particular, Wilder admitted he was impressed by Osborn and revealed that talks have been held about next season.

“He’s the water carrier, he’s brilliant. I’m not so sure that he thinks he can beat the Chelsea goalkeeper off his right peg leaning back in the 98th minute and stick it in the top corner but he gives us everything,” Wilder said.

“He’s been excellent since I came in, I knew what he’s about, his attitude, he’s a team player, if he plays he plays but if not he gives us his best and I think those are the players that are really invaluable to have around the place. You ask him to do a job and his knowledge and understanding of the game is really good. I thought he was excellent in the midfield.

“We spoke to Ben about extending, he’s got an option on his contract and one that we would like to work with next year.”

Osborn has become a key part of United’s squad under every manager since he was initially signed by Wilder.

While not the most gifted, he is appreciated by many at United due to his work-rate and the fact he’s willing to play pretty much anywhere.

Osborn, then, will be deserving of any new deal and should be a crucial squad player at Championship level.
