Sheffield United legend and now pundit, Michael Brown, has slammed John Lundstram for refusing to sign a new contract with the club.
Brown, who enjoyed a fine career with the Blades and scored some stunning strikes – including a wonder volley against Sheffield Wednesday – is now working for BT Sport on a lot of United games.
And Brown, speaking before the game to Rio Ferdinand and Jake Humphrey, was not impressed with the stance Lundstram has taken at Bramall Lane.
“He’s not the best player at the football club so he can’t expect to be the highest-paid at the football club. That would create uncertainty,” Brown said. (quotes via Yorkshire Live)
“Chris Wilder is the one who developed his career, took him onto another level and created a Premier League player. There’s got to be some loyalty, it’s hard in football because it’s not always there, but I think Chris Wilder can get the best out of him and develop him into a better player.”
Lundstram was dropped to the bench by Wilder but came on in the second half and had, arguably, the best chance of the game when he fired over Sander Berge’s cross.
As well as criticising Lundstram for not accepting the deal, Brown also touched on the reasons why United won’t be budging on their offer, and called on the midfielder to fall in line with club structure.
“With the football club, they’ve got a real sensible wage structure, they don’t pay like other Premier League clubs, and he has to fit in line with that. It’s all about the team at Sheffield United and, as they went up into the Premier League, a few players tried it and he moved them aside,” Brown added.
It will be interesting to see if Lundstram keeps his place when the likes of John Fleck return.
