Former Celtic boss says John Lundstram could help Rangers win title

John Barnes says that Rangers could stop Celtic winning a tenth successive title this season if they signed John Lundstram from Sheffield United.

Gers are one of the sides believed to have shown interest in Lundstram in recent times. In the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion, Burnley and West Ham United are also thought to be keen.

Lundstram has entered the final year of his current contract at Bramall Lane. Despite an extension be offered, nothing is close to being signed. Manager Chris Wilder has now admitted the midfielder could leave for free next summer.

Ex-Hoops boss, Barnes, thinks that the fierce rivals of his former team should move for Lundstram before then, though.

“If Steven Gerrard was to get John Lundstram for a free transfer from Sheffield United, that would be great,” the 56-year-old told the Daily Record.

“He is a very physical player, quite strong, and good on the ball with great passing ability.

“Overall, it would be a good signing for Rangers as they are so desperate to stop Celtic from winning the league again this year and securing the Ten In A Row.”

There is, of course, a chance that Lundstram could move to Ibrox. However, if it is to happen before his contract expires in 2021, then it’s highly unlikely to be as a “free transfer” as Barnes suggests.

The Blades are resigned to potentially losing Lundstram for nothing at the end of this season. Yet they will probably not be letting that happen before then.

Lundstram’s contract situation will affect his valuation if the South Yorkshire side do sell. But a fee will almost certainly be necessary for them to part with their player.

The one advantage Rangers do have over the others team supposedly interested in Lundstram is that they play outside of England. As a Scottish Premiership club, they could agree a pre-contract agreement with the former England Under-20 international in January.
