The goal from George Baldock for Sheffield United this past weekend is arguably one of the greatest strikes ever seen at Bramall Lane.

Baldock’s wonder striker, which came after more smart build up play from the Blades, had everyone inside the Lane on their feet and Baldock’s celebrations were wild as well. To be honest, he was well within his rights to lose himself in the moment. It really was a moment to savour for the United right-back.

But Baldock’s strike isn’t just doing the rounds among Sheffield social media and Championship accounts. Oh no, this one is getting recognition from the very top. Over on Twitter, the official FIFA account has posted a clip of Baldock’s stunner, and even hinted that the Blades star could win the prestigious Puskas award for his efforts.

Baldock admitted himself after the match it was the best goal he had ever scored, both on matchdays and in training.

Who Else Has Won The Puskas Award?

The prestigious award for best goal of the year has been won by some of the very best names in the business.

The current holder is former Spurs winger Erik Lamela. His rabona effort against Arsenal was a more than worthy winner. Remarkably, Tottenham have actually won it two years running, with Heung-Min Son winning it in 2020.

But some even bigger names have had their name etched into history. Zlatan Ibrahimović, Mo Salah, and Cristiano Ronaldo are just some of the star names to win the award, while Neymar has also got in one the act as well.

The sheer thought of a Sheffield United player winning the Puskas is a strange one. It seemed so long since Blades fans witnessed a ‘worldie’ of a goal, yet this season we have seen a few screamers. But Baldock’s tops the lot and in all honesty, it will take something truly remarkable to beat it this season.
