Sheffield United are set to part ways with Chris Wilder today and according to Sheffield United News sources, he could be on his way to Celtic.
Wilder leaves the Blades after nearly five years in charge of his boyhood club. In that time, he’s led United to the Premier League and within touching distance of a European spot last term.
However, as confirmed by Sky Sports today, Wilder’s time with the Blades is coming to an end with the club heading back into the Championship.
But given Wilder’s record with United, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be out of a job for long and we understand that both Celtic and Crystal Palace are open to bringing Wilder in as new manager.
Celtic would be a huge job for Wilder. Having parted ways with Neil Lennon, the Scottish giants are desperate to get their next appointment right. It would pit Wilder against Steven Gerrard, who has led Rangers to the title at a canter.
Palace, meanwhile, have expressed interest in Wilder before. And with Roy Hodgson not getting any younger, the Eagles may fancy making a move while the opportunity is there.
Chris Wilder to Celtic? It would be a huge opportunity
While we are gutted to see Chris Wilder leaving United, the thought of him moving on to Celtic is one that almost makes you proud.
Say what you like but the Bhoys are an enormous club. It would represent a massive challenge for Wilder and give him the chance to pit his wits against European competition for the first time.
Palace is a steady job for the Blades legend but we’d much rather see him take the job at Celtic if he is to go somewhere else.
