Sheffield United completed the signing of Ethan Ampadu this week as Chelsea agreed to let the Welsh international move to Bramall Lane on a season-long loan.

Ampadu, who has played more international games than Premier League games, will be hoping to impress at United and show Frank Lampard he can do the business in the top-flight.

Having spent last season with RB Leipzig – a spell hampered by the odd injury – the teenager will be desperate to make his mark and force his way into Chris Wilder’s starting XI.

And Ampadu’s quality has been recognised by his international manager, Ryan Giggs, who may well have influenced the youngster’s decision in joining the Blades.

“It’s that balance over whether they’re at a top club and surrounded by top players and improving every day, but ultimately you need minutes on the pitch. That’s a decision for Ethan. I’ve talked to him a lot about that.

“I think last year was maybe a little bit different as he had injuries. You could see from the game he played against Tottenham in the Champions League he was outstanding. Nothing fazes him, he’s a quality player, and he just needs to keep fit now.”

Those comments from Giggs suggest that the 19-year-old has the very brightest of futures in the game. It could be, too, that the former Manchester United legend influenced Ampadu’s decision to move to Sheffield.

There’s probably an element of surprise with this signing and in fairness, a lot of Blades fans will not know a whole lot about the Wales starlet.

But there is a fantastic player in their with Ampadu. As well as Giggs, Frank Lampard also thinks very highly of the teenager and it’s widely expected that he’ll go on to become a Chelsea player for years to come.

As Giggs commented on, Ampadu was superb against Spurs last season in the Champions League. If that is just a glimpse of what United are getting, then Chris Wilder will have pulled off a masterstroke in the market.
