Aaron Ramsdale was rewarded for his fine end of season form yesterday, as he replaced the injured Dean Henderson in the England squad.
Ramsdale had already been called up to the pre-squad. But he missed out, with Gareth Southgate opting for Henderson and Sam Johnstone to back up Jordan Pickford.
However, a hip injury for Henderson has ruled him out. It means Ramsdale, 23, becomes the first Blade to represent United for England in a major tournament since Alan Hodgkinsons in 1962.
The likelihood is that Ramsdale won’t play a minute in the Euros. But the opportunity for him to be there is recognition of his outstanding work in the last 5 months of the season.
Ramsdale also used his Instagram to good effect. After receiving the call, he use his profile to send a classy message to Henderson.
Naturally, there were plenty of teammates, past and present, who wanted to wish ‘Rambo’ well.
Henderson leads praise and well-wishes for Aaron Ramsdale
The United stopper is clearly a popular figure. He’s well-liked at Shirecliffe and has built up an array of friends and contacts at England under-21 level.
It’s unsurprising, then, to see so many comments on Ramsdale’s Instagram.
Here’s a look at what was said, as Dean Henderson returned the favour.
