Sheffield United have been hit with yet another injury to a key player, this time with David McGoldrick set to miss out for the Republic of Ireland this week.
An abductor injury will reportedly keep McGoldrick out of both of Ireland’s Nations League games this coming week, and it remains to be seen if he’ll be fit the Blades’ clash with Fulham this weekend.
It remains to be seen, officially, how long ‘Didzy’ will be out for. However, if he is to miss the clash with the Cottagers, it represents a big blow to United, given he is the only player to score this season.
Furthermore, many Blades consider McGoldrick to be key to how we play. His way of dropping deep to bring others into play, added to his experience at the top level, mean he is a key figure in the XI.
How long will McGoldrick be out for then?
The honest answer here at the moment is that we don’t know.
However, a quick search online about abductor injuries reveals that it could be anything from around ten days up to six weeks, depending on the severity.
Obviously, United will be hoping McGoldrick’s knock is closer to the bottom end of that scale. Given he picked up the injury before the weekend, and he might just have a chance. Coupled with the fact the game has now been moved to Sunday instead of Saturday and we might well just get McGoldrick in the starting XI.
If not, it represents a chance for Oli McBurnie and new boy, Rhian Brewster to step into the fold. Oliver Burke is also a doubt after withdrawing from the Scotland squad with injury.
