‘Crazy’…Alan Shearer can’t believe what he saw during Sheffield United v Luton yesterday

Sheffield United might have finally got an away win yesterday by seeing off Luton but the focus afterwards was once again on VAR.

The VAR officials gave two penalties in the game and both were soft to the say the very least.

First, Reece Burke was adjudged to have handballed it from a corner to give United the chance to go 2-0 up from the penalty spot, which James McAtee duly obliged in doing.

However, things were soon evened up when Vini Souza was adjudged to have done similar early in the second half.

The Brazilian simply could not get out of the way and was even nudged in the back before it ball grazed his arm.

And speaking about the decision on Match of the Day, Alan Shearer felt that it was an absolute joke of a call from the officials.

“If you think the first one is bad, then what about this one, with Souza? Honestly, it’s an absolute joke of a decision. I really think he thinks the VAR’s given the first one so he’s going to even it up for the second one and he better give that one. How on earth does he think that’s handball? It’s a crazy decision,” Shearer said.

Referees are just getting worse for some reason

Both of these decisions were utterly ridiculous and quite what is going on in that VAR room is getting beyond a joke now.

Neither set of players even batted an eyelid for the one on Burke, while only a few Luton players made half-hearted appeals for the decision on Souza.

Quite why the referee can’t go to the screen and see what we all see and decide not to give the decision is beyond us. It’s like they buckle as soon as VAR recommends something, instead of showing some bottle.

There will come a point where fans simply lose interest and the majority of the blame will have to sit with the officials and lawmakers who right now, are just ruining elements of the game.
