Chris Wilder has spoken of the attributes and qualities needed from a footballer to be able to adapt to multiple positions, much like Chris Basham has done for the Blades.
Basham has become one of the most important players in the Sheffield United squad. Having converted from a central midfielder to a right centre-back with attacking freedom, Basham’s performances have been integral in United’s rise to the Premier League.

And Wilder, who was speaking ahead of the launch of FIFA 21, has revealed just what’s needed and what he expects from a player to change roles as Basham has.
“Chris Basham is a good example. He’s played as a midfielder, a centre-half, a wing-back for us,” Wilder said.

“He needs the physical qualities to play there but the biggest part is ‘does he want to do it?’. You need players who are selfless and want to do it. Players that are team players and, if asked – and we feel they can do it – can adapt to their role”.
Basham is closing in on 300 appearances for the Blades, with just eleven more needed to ensure he hits that magical figure.

One of the current favourites at Bramall Lane, Basham has surprised most United fans with his adaptation and level of performance at Premier League level.
Not something for everyone, Basham is a unique talent
Let’s all just admit that we didn’t see Chris Basham being one of our most important and consistent players in the Premier League. When we were promoted, a lot of Blades would have said he was one who could be replaced.
However, he’s been nothing short of outstanding, winning player of the year last year and performing just as well this season from his attacking right centre-back role.
The insight from Wilder is good and interesting to hear. It shows that it’s not just a case of being able to slot into something and that a lot has gone into considering Basham’s role.
And long may that continue.
