Chris Wilder confirms new contract set to be announced today

Sheffield United boss, Chris Wilder, has confirmed the club has agreed a new contract with one of its players.

The Blades manager was speaking ahead of his club’s trip to Newcastle United this weekend. Having hinted something was close last week, Wilder went one step further today to confirm something will be announced.

However, the United gaffer stopped short of naming who it might be.

“Something will be announced today”, Wilder said. (Richard Sutcliffe)

“I’m not telling you who, though. Our social media guys will want to do that!”

A number of players could be in the frame for new deals at Bramall Lane. The likes of John Egan and Enda Stevens have been tipped for new contracts while John Lundstram is also yet to sign a new deal.

Lundstram’s deal expires in the summer. However, the Blades have an option to extend his current deal by a year which Wilder previously confirmed they will be taking up.

More positive news at Bramall Lane

In a season that doesn’t seem to have had more than a handful of negative moments, this is yet another piece of positive news for the club.

New contracts are going to be key to ensuring continuity within the current crop of players. So many of them have done so well and Chris Wilder is keen to keep his core group together as best he can.

Whoever gets the new deal will be deserving. Lundstram has proven himself in the Premier League while the likes of Stevens, Egan, and Norwood would all be equally deserving of new terms with the club.

While January was important in bringing in new faces, it’s equally important that the more experienced members of the group stay together. It looks, then, as if the Blades board are doing their best to address that very facet of the club.
