Chris Basham selected in team of the month as football in March closes down

Sheffield United defender, Chris Basham, appears to have finally drawn some mainstream praise by being selected in the team of the month for March.

With football closing down for the next few weeks thanks to the global pandemic sweeping the world, March has ended up being a month where just two rounds of fixtures were completed.

For the Blades, this meant a trip to Reading in the FA Cup before a home win over Norwich City last weekend.

However, despite the lack of game time, Basham was his usual impressive self and was selected by Whoscored to be in their XI for the month. Of course, this can be taken with a pinch of salt, given the lack of game time, but it is still a mark of how well Basham is doing.

Basham sees himself selected alongside the likes of Marcos Alonso and Mason Mount at Chelsea. Leicester City trio, Harvey Barnes, Jamie Vardy, and Marc Albrighton are also named in the XI.

Take it lightly but Basham deserves this

Not one Sheffield United fan will deny Chris Basham the honour of being selected in a team of the month. Yes, it has been a one-off month with little football played but some would argue that Basham deserves to be in there given his performances all season.

The 31-year-old has been outstanding for the Blades. After adapting to life in the Premier League, Basham has become integral. It is a testament to the defender that, in the summer, a number of Blades fans highlighted Basham’s position as one that might need upgrading.

The former Bolton and Blackpool man has been a model of consistency in red and white. He’s seemingly mastered the art of the attacking centre-back role Chris Wilder deploys him in.

It’s just a shame Basham is not a few years younger. With a number of players in the Blades squad pushing for England calls, Basham would surely be one knocking on Gareth Southgate’s door if he was the right side of 30.
