There hasn’t been a lot to shout about this season for Sheffield United but young midfielder James McAtee is at least trying to buck the trend.
The Manchester City loanee is back at Bramall Lane for a second spell this season after playing a key role in helping United to promotion last season.
McAtee has scored five goals this season for United and been a regular under both Paul Heckingbottom and now Chris Wilder.
Predominantly deployed as an attacking midfielder from wide areas, McAtee actually filled in as a forward last weekend against Brighton. After Mason Holgate was sent off, the 21-year-old was given the job of leading the line for United and worked hard all game, despite the 5-0 defeat.
And speaking about McAtee’s performance and contribution this season, form United forward Carl Asaba was full of praise for the City youngster on SUTV.
“His physical stature now, the way he plays the game, is as good as anyone. I thought he was outstanding against Brighton. There were moments McAtee did just what McAtee does. Brilliant technical stuff, his body swerves and his use of the ball were brilliant,” Asaba said.

Much like when the Blades had Morgan Gibbs-White – albeit in different circumstances – we’re at the point now where fans simply need to make the most of watching McAtee.
This is a young player with the world at his feet and while the standard at Manchester City is so so high, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him in their squad next season.
For United, there’s simply no chance we sign McAtee unless we somehow stay up and then new investors come along. Even then, there’s likely to be competition for his signature.
Right now, McAtee is one of a few shining lights in what is otherwise a pretty poor Sheffield United outfit.
Hopefully, McAtee can deliver a few more moments of magic this season and help United at least get a half decent points total on the board.
