Reported Sheffield United target, Joe Rothwell, has confirmed that he’ll be leaving Blackburn Rovers this summer to pursue a fresh challenge.
Rothwell, 27, has been linked with a move to Bramall Lane in recent weeks. The former Manchester United academy player has excelled with Rovers this term, and the Blades are among a cluster of clubs keen on signing him this summer.
And now, per Blackburn’s end of season statement on their retained list, Rothwell has indeed informed the Ewood Park hierarchy he wishes to move on. Rovers have confirmed that Rothwell has told the club he’ll be leaving, bringing an end to a four-year spell in Lancashire.
Of course, should United wish to sign Rothwell, they’ll need to beat off a host of other interested clubs. The likes of Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest are both known to have watched Rothwell this season.

Rothwell can play a number of positions across the midfield. Labelled as a ‘super talent‘ by now ex-Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, there is set to be a scramble for his signature.
Our View: Sheffield United Must Strike Early To Land Joe Rothwell
The player himself might already have a good idea of where he wants to go anyway. But in United’s case, if they do want Rothwell, then you feel they’ll need to move quickly.
Paul Heckingbottom wants to crack on with planning for next season as quickly as possible. Part of that is bringing in fresh faces to enhance the squad. Hecky is known to want around six or seven new players at Bramall Lane.
Of course, Rothwell is entitled to wait things out. If there is interest from Forest, he could well be waiting to see if they’re promoted. And in fairness, you cannot blame the midfielder for looking at the highest level possible.
