Dean Hammond has given an intriguing and insightful interview this week and Billy Sharp has taken time out to defend his former teammate.
Hammond was speaking exclusively to the Sheffield United Way podcast, and offered some candid and honest insight into his time with the Blades.
The former Leicester City midfielder was often at the centre of fans’ anger, as the Blades endured a miserable season under Nigel Adkins.
And Hammond admitted that his performances had not been good enough during the podcast. Rather honourably, the midfielder admitted he’d become a shadow of his former self, admitting he’d taken ‘full responsibility’ for not delivering what he should have at Bramall Lane.
But it’s easy to forget that there was more to that losing squad than just Dean Hammond. His contract situation when Chris Wilder took over didn’t endear him to Blades fans further, but this is something, again, he explains on the podcast.
What Billy Sharp has had to say to Dean Hammond
Like most things nowadays which hit social media, it gives players and fans the chance to have their say and get involved. And that’s exactly what current skipper Sharp has done with Hammond.
Taking time out to have his say on Hammond’s interview, Sharp seemed to defend his former teammate and instead took aim at some of the other players in the squad.
As always, there is more to some stories than meets the eye and, as fans, we often don’t know the inner workings of what might have happened.
Hammond’s interview here, plus Sharp’s comments, suggest that there were more than one underlying circumstance contributing to United’s dismal form under Nigel Adkins.
