Wigan Athletic defender, Antonee Robinson, is ready to join a “top-tier club” amid links to Sheffield United.
According to Sky Sports, the Blades have had a £2m offer for Robinson accepted.
Wigan need to sell players to balance the books. This is after going into administration and being relegated from the Championship.
Now, Robinson has spoken publicly about his future. And it seems a move to Bramall Lane could well be happening.
“I’m pretty sure I will be leaving, bar anything out the blue happening,” the 23-year-old told BBC Sport.
“I’m open to moving to a top-tier club. Whether it ends up being a Premier League team, a Serie A team or a Bundesliga team I don’t know yet. That’s all in the hands of my agent and who wants me more.
“I’m hoping that I can go to a club now where it’s a new challenge, it’s a higher standard and most of all I still want to play.”
When could Antonee Robinson join Sheffield United?
There remain some issues with the transfer of Robinson. It is made slightly more complicated because it is being negotiated through administrators.
While the Sheffield Star reports talks have reached an advanced stage, their first priority is finding a new owner for the Latics.
However, as mentioned, raising funds for the cash-strapped club is also important. Robinson is likely to attract one of the bigger fees among their squad.
Unfortunately for Wigan, it will still be significantly less than what they would have received in January. Robinson was lined up for a £6m switch to AC Milan, only for the deal to fall through at the last minute.
During his medical at Milan, it was detected that the USA international had an irregular heartbeat. Yet Robinson has since been cleared of the issue without having to undergo surgery.
West Bromwich Albion have also shown interest, but barring any similar problems, the left-back is expected to complete his move to South Yorkshire soon.
