‘A real good character’…Chris Wilder admits Sheffield United ‘dilemma’ over 25-year-old player

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has suggested that summer signing Tom Davies might not be too far away from getting a start.

The former Everton man has had a nightmare first season at Bramall Lane. After looking like just getting going under Paul Heckingbottom, he then suffered a serious freak injury in training to rule him out for months.

However, Davies has now returned to the fold and has featured from the bench in the last few games in a positive sign for the Blades.

And ahead of facing Wolves this weekend, Chris Wilder has admitted that he has a ‘dilemma’ on his hands when it comes to handing Davies more minutes.

Tom Davies conundrum strikes for Sheffield United

Speaking in his pre-match presser today, Wilder admitted he wants to get Davies involved more and now has a decision on when to hand him a starting spot.

“That’s the dilemma now. When do we go with Tom and give him his first start under me. He’s got on the pitch at Luton and Brighton. So, that’s going to be a question from our point of view. I suppose, talking in old money we’d have loved him to have a couple of reserve team games but the situation with that is a bit difficult now,” Wilder said.

“He’s been bright around the place. He’s a player the club have missed hugely, though his Premier League experience but he’s been around it which has been really good. He’s a real good character and a personality and him being around the group and speaking and having the feel of a Premier League player in the ranks is beneficial and more beneficial to us when we can get him on the pitch.”

Davies has to play if fit

It can’t get much worse, can it?

If Tom Davies is fit then he has to be somewhere in this Sheffield United XI. We signed him for a reason and that reason is he is a Premier League quality player who has a lot to offer in midfield.

That midfield this season has been lacklustre at best so if the 25-year-old is fit and Wilder can find a way with the shape, then Davies has to be included.

Davies, Hamer and Souza doesn’t look too bad on paper either, with McAtee then supporting someone like Cam Archer up top.
