Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom is set to be sacked this morning by the Blades, with Chris Wilder the most likely replacement.

According to The Telegraph, Heckingbottom’s departure is expected to be confirmed and Wilder is the main contender to take over.

The Blades have had a nightmare season and sit bottom of the table and it looks like Heckingbottom is going to pay with his job.

The Telegraph claims that an announcement is due and at the moment, it’s former gaffer Wilder who is the main favourite to take over the reins.

United take on Liverpool this week and there is already a big worry among supporters that another heavy defeat is incoming.

Wilder coming back is short-term thinking

Quite what is going on at Sheffield United is anyone’s guess but the fact it’s taken a few days since the hammering at the weekend to get rid of Heckingbottom says it all.

The fact that Chris Wilder is the man to come back into the picture says even more.

Wilder has nothing to lose if he takes a short-term contract but if he is given a longer-term deal then it’s a truly odd call from the board.

For Wilder, it’s a case of coming into a sinking ship and if we do pick a few wins up then he looks like the hero.

But at the moment, the club is a mess and it’s impossible to see anything but another big loss this week and more to follow over the winter.
