Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder faces a bit of a nightmare in picking his starting XI for the visit of Southampton today.
Phil Jagielka’s red card in midweek means the Blades enter the game with no recognised central defender in the ranks. Jagielka joins the likes of Egan, Basham, and O’Connell on the sidelines for this one.
Wilder has been reluctant to change his 3-5-2 formation all season but he could well go with a slight change this weekend. Four at the back seems like being a sensible option, with a narrow midfield four in front.
Kean Bryan and Ethan Ampadu should be picked at centre-back, while Enda Stevens and George Baldock will be the fullbacks.
In midfield, Ben Osborn may well come into the fold on the left. That could mean a middle pairing of Norwood and Fleck, with John Lundstram shifted out to the right-hand side.
Finally, up front is where Wilder needs to get things right. David McGoldrick is certain to start against his former club, while it remains to be seen if Wilder goes with Rhian Brewster once again.
Here, then, is our predicted XI as Sheffield United take on Southampton today.
