The Magpies have only lost two of their last six games, with two wins coming in that same period. They also drew with Manchester City at the weekend after an impressive performance at St James’ Park.

Steve Bruce appears to be getting the right messages into his squad after a tricky start to life in the north-east.

And Bruce could be handed a further boost ahead of tonight’s trip to Bramall Lane, with both Andy Carroll and DeAndre Yedlin set to be available for selection.

Speaking ahead of the clash with Chris Wilder’s United outfit, Bruce admitted that both players have a chance of making the squad.

“They’ve got an outstanding chance,” Bruce said (Sunderland Echo).

“We’re just about to train now before we go down there. They trained yesterday and, as long as there’s no real setbacks, they’ve got a chance.”

News of a return for the duo would be a big boost for the Magpies. With such a hefty and congested fixture list coming up, having a fully-fit squad could be vital.

Indeed, the return of Carroll could also be crucial. Brazilian striker, Joelinton, is currently struggling for goals.

With Carroll out injured, Bruce has only been able to call upon Dwight Gayle as a replacement for the Brazilian.

A boost at the right time of the season for Steve Bruce

It’s always a key part of the season, December. Fixtures pile up, injuries and suspensions hit, and the games come thick and fast in harsh conditions.

Therefore, having the likes of Yedlin and Carroll back will please Bruce.

Yedlin brings with him the pace and power Bruce likes to see in his team. His lung-busting runs from full-back can be a real difference-maker for the Magpies this season.

Carroll, on the other hand, is well-known in the Premier League. Despite his injury struggles, he is still a massive handful and someone who can take the pressure off Joelinton.

Newcastle need all the help they can get at the moment so this timely injury boost is good news indeed.
