Liverpool could hand Ben Davies his Reds debut as they travel to Sheffield United to face Chris Wilder’s side this weekend.
Davies, a surprise late January signing from Preston, has yet to feature for Jurgen Klopp’s side but has been in and around the matchday squad.
But with Jordan Henderson now out, Fabinho only returning to training this week, and long-term casualties at centre-back, Davies could get his debut for the Reds at Bramall Lane. Albeit, in the Liverpool jersey rather than the Sheffield United one it could have been.
Furthermore, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has urged Jurgen Klopp to hand Davies his Reds bow.
United had held a long-term interest in signing Davies. However, the Preston man bided his time with the Lancashire outfit, before seeing an irresistable offer from Anfield come his way on deadline day.
Sheffield United wanted Ben Davies and Blades will be keen to avoid Lingard repeat
United failed to sign anyone in the January window. Davies was one name mentioned, while another who Wilder wanted was Jesse Lingard.
Indeed, the Blades got an up close and personal view of what might have been with Lingard. The West Ham man ran us ragged just a couple of weeks ago in a 3-0 defeat.
And while Davies might not have that same impact at the top end of the pitch, United fans will hope to see the defender come nowhere near the performance level Lingard showed.
It’s already hard enough and the Blades have countless injury problems. Seeing another one of our targets put in a sterling display at Bramall Lane will be yet another big kick to the guts.
