Chelsea manager Frank Lampard says Christian Pulisic is a doubt for Saturday’s match with Sheffield United.

Lampard has confirmed Pulisic will miss this evening’s Champions League clash with Rennes with a hamstring injury.

The USA international was withdrawn from the starting XI at Burnley last weekend after injuring himself in the warm-up.

But Lampard has confirmed it isn’t serious.

“It’s very minor, which is good, and he’s already back outside,” the Blues boss said in his pre-match press conference.

“We are pleased it’s not a serious injury and we hope to have him back very soon, because he’s an important player for us.

“Muscle injuries are things you have to be careful with and some players who play on the edge and have speed could be more susceptible to them. We are looking at ways to manage Christian, we are all working in the same direction on that front.”

Lampard has such a wealth of talent at his disposal that Pulisic’s absence wasn’t felt at Turf Moor.

Tim Werner replaced the 22-year-old in the starting lineup and the German scored in a 3-0 win for the West London side.

Fellow summer signing Hakim Ziyech also netted in the victory over the Clarets having started in a front three alongside Werner and Tammy Abraham. Meanwhile, Lampard brought attacking options Oliver Giroud and Callum Hudson-Odoi off the bench.

Mason Mount played in central midfield, but also has the capability to operate further forwards.

Chelsea are in decent form this season, having only been beaten twice in all competitions. One of those was a penalty shootout defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup. The other was a Premier League loss to champions Liverpool.

Lampard’s men are seventh in the table, four points behind the leaders. They have also kept clean sheets in their last four matches in all competitions.
