Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire, has spoken of his admiration for Billy Sharp and admitted that he wished he could have played with him.
Maguire never got to play with Sharp at Bramall Lane. However, Sharp was around when Maguire was a young player coming through the ranks for the Blades.
Sharp is now in his third spell with United and is skippering the club in the Premier League.
And speaking to BT Sport, Maguire, who moved to Old Trafford via Hull and Leicester since leaving S2, admits he’s delighted for the Blades captain.
“Billy’s always been a great pro and a great player, and most importantly, a great guy,” Maguire said.
“I was really young when Billy was first there. I wish he was playing when I was there as we might have got promoted with him in the team!”.
The big England defender has adapted to life in the Premier League with ease. Now, playing for the 13-time PL champions, Maguire is the captain of the Red Devils.
However, he admits he still looks out for Sheffield United’s result as soon as he’s finished his business in Manchester.
“I’m delighted to see him playing in the Premier League scoring goals. It’s the first result I look for when I come off the pitch at Old Trafford, so it’s nice to see them doing so well,” Maguire added.
Fond memories and homegrown roots run deep with Maguire
Maguire is still a Sheffield boy at heart and despite moving to the glitz and glamour of Old Trafford, remains a grounded footballer.
He still loves Sheffield United. That is clear to see. Like many players who leave the club, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him make a return to Bramall Lane at some point later in his career.
Harry Maguire is one of the big success stories for the Blades in recent times. It’s nice, then, to see him acknowledging this current crop and especially, Billy Sharp.
