Report: Sheffield United want to sign 'unbelievable' international player regardless of promotion

Sheffield United are keen on signing Manchester City and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu, according to a report from The Sun this weekend.

Bazunu has enjoyed a fine spell with Portsmouth this season and is keen to take the next step in his career to keep up the momentum. The Sun claims that the Blades, along with Preston and more, are keen on the young stopper.

The 20-year-old is currently on the books at Manchester City but is aware that first-team chances are hard to come by at The Etihad. However, he is highly-rated and already had 10 caps for Ireland. His performances with Portsmouth have earned rave reviews, with Danny Cowley labelling one moment from Bazunu this season as ‘unbelievable’.

United signed Adam Davies as cover for Wes Foderingham but there has yet to be a decision on whether or not the club will extend his deal. Jake Eastwood is likely to move on, leaving Paul Heckingbottom short in the goalkeeping department.

The Blades have enjoyed success recently with a loan goalkeeper in the form of Dean Henderson. Of course, Robin Olsen’s loan move wasn’t a good one, so the club will hope Bazunu follows Henderson’s path.

Our View: Bazunu An Outstanding Young Goalkeeper

Whether or not he’s good enough to take over from Foderingham just yet, remains to be seen. But there is no doubting that Gavin Bazunu is a talented stopper.

Crucially, he does seem to have that confidence about him that good goalkeepers need. Henderson was the same when he was with us, so it’s a good trait to have.

A big summer lies ahead for United. And that’s regardless of which league we are in. The playing staff needs an overhaul, while there is talk of a takeover in the background as well. In terms of transfers, the club needs to know what’s happening ASAP, or they could miss out on players such as Bazunu.
