While Sheffield United completed the signing of goalkeeper Adam Davies today, one mane who won’t be following the stopper to Bramall Lane is Middlesbrough winger, Marcus Browne.
According to Football Insider, Browne is a target for the Blades this month. It was claimed that the former West Ham man was on United’s radar, with Paul Heckingbottom looking to balance out this current Blades squad.
However, nothing has been mentioned of United’s interest since that report and according to The South London Press, Browne is set to sign for Charlton Athletic instead. Reports of a loan move for Browne have been mooted, however, SLP claim that the Addicks are looking at a permanent deal for the ‘Boro ace.
Browne, 24, has been on the fringe of things at Boro this season and with the club resurgent under former Blades boss Chris Wilder, a move is now likely. However, it seems like he won’t be coming to Bramall Lane.

Best known for a loan spell with Oxford United – where Karl Robinson labelled Browne as ‘sensational’ – the versatile winger would have brought depth to the Blades squad. However, he wouldn’t be a starter by any means, meaning a switch back into the third tier might suit everyone best here.
Our View: Blades Can Do Better Than Browne
This was always an odd rumour in the first place so it’s little surprise to see Browne making a move elsewhere.
Sure, under Slavisa Jokanovic, you could see the logic. The Serbian wanted to play with wingers and with United lacking them, Browne would have been a sensible enough option. But now, under Heckingbottom, there simply wouldn’t be a place for the 24-year-old.
Ultimately, any new signings need to have a serious chance of either playing in the starting XI or really challenging those currently with the shirt. It’s unlikely Browne would have done either, so it’s probably a good thing United avoided a deal.
Hopefully, this week will see Heckingbottom land a few more targets. Adam Davies is a smart signing as number two and with three or four moved on, you’d hope the board back the Blades boss.
