Sheffield United stars to watch out for during the international break

Sheffield United do not have a game this weekend due to the international break.

However, that does not mean that all of their squad will be enjoying some well-earned time off.

Several of their players are in action for their countries and Blades fans can keep an eye on how they get on.

Here are those United stars who could feature:

Republic of Ireland

There is a strong Irish connection with Bramall Lane, with no fewer than four players included in Mick McCarthy’s squad.

Defenders John Egan and Enda Stevens are looking to add to their four and six caps respectively when the Republic face Gibraltar (March 23) and Georgia (March 26) in Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Scott Hogan, on loan from Aston Villa, is also named, while David McGoldrick is included almost two years since the his last cap.

With 12 Championship goals this season, Stevens think it is a smart move by McCarthy to recall McGoldrick.

“He’s been excellent. He plays the striker role differently to most players, it’s a different way and it benefits a lot of people around the pitch,” the left-back told the Sheffield Star.

“He makes most of the team probably a better player because he takes the ball in tight situations, he’s tricky, he gets goals. He’s got a bit of everything.”

Northern Ireland

Conor Washington is in contention to start for his country in qualifiers against Estonia (March 21) and Belarus (March 24) with the news Will Grigg is injured.

Oliver Norwood will not be playing having ruled himself out due to personal reasons.

Scotland

John Fleck is in the Scotland squad to face Kazakhstan (March 21) and San Marino (March 24) and could well earn his first cap.

“It is a great occasion for myself and my family for me to be called up again. I always hoped it would come along,” Fleck told the Scottish Sun.

“It has obviously taken quite a bit of time, but now I feel as if I’m playing consistently well at club level and now I have got that chance.”

England Under-21

Dean Henderson, who is on loan from Manchester United, is among Aidy Boothroyd’s England Under-21s squad. They play Poland today (March 21) and then Germany on Tuesday (March 26).

Senior England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed that Henderson isn’t too far from his squad.
