Sheffield United fan reveals classy gesture from Wilder ahead of operation

One Sheffield United fan has revealed that manager Chris Wilder has been in touch with him ahead of having surgery.

Nathan Corker, who appears to be a season ticket holder at Bramall Lane, posted on Twitter a message he received from Wilder.

In it, it says that Nathan is having an eye operation. The other details are understandably more discreet, but the Blades supporter is clearly experiencing a tough time currently.

It’s not clear how Wilder found out about Nathan’s situation, but it’s a classy gesture nonetheless.

There is plenty of support for him and praise for the United boss under the tweet – both from Blades fans and several Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

It’s not unusual for managers to get in touch with fans who are having issues, but it doesn’t make them any less meaningful.

However, the thing which does set Wilder apart is that he too is a supporter of the club.

Born and raised in Sheffield and a product of the United academy, his connections at Bramall Lane run deep.

It’s why it was even more special when Wilder led the South Yorkshire club back to glory.

They endured their lowest EFL finish since 1983 the year before the 53-year-old took charge in May 2016, finishing 11th in League One.

Since then Wilder has guided them to two promotions and a ninth place finish in the Premier League.

It’s why he’s been backed by the majority of the fanbase, despite the Blades’ poor start to this campaign. They are currently bottom of the table with one point from nine games.

Some have called for Wilder to be sacked as a result, but online he is mostly getting support:
