Despite being under a transfer embargo, Sheffield United are reportedly looking to try and sign teenager midfielder Ethan Brierley from Rochdale.
The Blades featured a trialist in their latest under-21 game last night as they won 2-0. And while it’s unknown if that trialist was indeed Brierley, Football Insider claims the Blades are looking to sign the midfielder after a trial period.
It’s claimed United are looking at ways to do a deal to sign Brierley, despite their embargo. FI claims that the 19-year-old Rochdale ace has also been looked at by Manchester City.
However, it is Paul Heckingbottom’s side who are looking to press ahead with a deal. United are looking to sign young players who have future value and Brierley, who is already a regular with Rochdale, fits the bill.

Brierley had been playing regularly for Dale until December. Since then, he hasn’t featured.
Whether or not there is any way for United to sign players under the embargo, remains to be seen. The club had been hoping to raise funds to pay off the outstanding debt this week. However, as yet, nothing has come out to suggest there’s been a change.
Sheffield United News View: Brierley one to add to the exciting youth ranks
It’s always nice to see the club being linked with good young players. Brierley is clearly a talented player, having featured in first-team football already at a good level.
Of course, he’s not the sort of signing who is going to improve United now. He’s one for the future and one Heckingbottom will fancy working with and improving.
The fact City have looked at him suggests he’s got something in the locker, too. With a bit of luck, this might happen and with even more luck, the embargo gets lifted.
